In The Area

Located just over minutes of Big Bear, CA, Barton Flats camps have a lot for you to see and explore! Take a look to see about all that these camps have to offer.

JENKS LAKE / FISHING

Jenks Lake picnic area is a day use area only at  an elevation of 6,800 ft. This picnic area provides accessible fishing from either the fishing pier or from several fishing pads along the shore. An accessible trail is located along the parking lot side of the lake. Most Barton Flats Association Camps also pay for private access to pinic areas on the shore as well as canoes and kayak availability.

There are accessible picnic sites and restrooms also available at this location.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife plants rainbow trout twice per month spring and summer.

ANGELUS OAKS

Its downtown consists of a general store, a gas station, a restaurant, a post office, a real estate office, and a sheriff's office. Within the town are two commercial lodges for overnight visitors. One is the Angelus Oaks Lodge that originally served as a stagecoach stop for passengers traveling up the mountain to Big Bear.

Angelus Oaks is now a favorite to bicyclists due to its proximity to the Santa Ana River Trail (S.A.R.T.) which is renowned for its grandeur and challenge. For hikers, Angelus Oaks offers the San Bernardino Peak Hiking Trail (1W07) and the Vivian Creek Trail. There are also other less vigorous trails situated throughout the San Gorgonio Wilderness. The Angelus Oaks Lodge offers a great overnight and staging area for bikers and hikers wishing to get an early morning start.

BARTON FLATS VISTORS CENTER

The Barton Flats Visitor Center is the center of activities for the tent campgrounds in the area.  Informal programs are presented with display animals from the San Bernardino County Museum. San Gorgonio Wilderness Association(SGWA) members develop and present interpretive programs for over a thousand children each year. Nature walks and interpretive programs are also presented to campers from the four area family campgrounds on summer weekends. One of the most popular programs for the last three years has been an informal astronomy presentation, giving campers a chance to peek at the heavens without the city pollution.   The area offers unique views of the Sand to Snow National Monument.
